Red Light Therapy: Complete Guide to Benefits, Safety & Effective Treatment

At Coastal Rehab Hub, we hear from many Central Coast locals who are looking for safe, non-invasive ways to support healing, reduce inflammation and improve their overall wellbeing. Red Light Therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light (630–850nm) to stimulate cellular repair and energy production.

While red light therapy has become increasingly popular in wellness spaces, its foundations come from decades of scientific research. Multiple medical-grade devices have received international regulatory clearance for skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction and other clinical benefits — confirming its value far beyond fad status.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how Red Light Therapy works, what the research tells us, and how our full-body Prism Light Pod at Coastal Rehab Hub offers one of the most advanced treatment options available on the Central Coast.

What Is Full-Body Red Light Therapy?

A non-invasive, scientifically backed therapy for whole-body healing.

Red light therapy — also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) — uses targeted wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate the mitochondria within your cells. This boosts cellular energy, improves blood flow and accelerates tissue repair.

The Prism Light Pod delivers full-body PBM, allowing every major muscle group and organ system to benefit from increased circulation, reduced inflammation and improved cellular function. Backed by thousands of peer-reviewed studies, PBM is now recognised as a powerful tool in recovery, rehabilitation and overall wellbeing.

What Red Light Therapy Can Help With

Support for pain, inflammation, recovery and whole-body wellness.

Red Light Therapy may assist with:

  • Sports recovery & muscle repair
  • Chronic pain and inflammation
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Injury and wound healing
  • Skin health & tissue quality
  • Improved energy and mental clarity
  • Reduced stress and better sleep
  • Hormonal balance and reduced brain fog
  • Enhanced lymphatic and immune function
  • Improved circulation and cellular repair

There is also growing evidence that red light therapy supports skin tone, elasticity and collagen production, particularly when combined with regular movement or exercise.

History and Evolution of Red Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy has been around far longer than most people realise. It began in the 1960s when scientist Endre Mester discovered that low-level laser light could accelerate wound healing and stimulate hair growth in early research trials.

From there, the technology evolved significantly:

  • NASA studied red light for tissue repair during space missions
  • LED technology advanced, making treatment safer and more accessible

Today

Red Light Therapy is widely used in:

  • Dermatology
  • Sports medicine
  • Rehabilitation
  • Wellness and recovery
  • Pain management

At Coastal Rehab Hub, we use the Prism Light Pod — a full-body, medical-grade red and near-infrared system that reflects the highest level of technological evolution to date.

Understanding Red Light Therapy & Photobiomodulation

Red Light Therapy works by delivering therapeutic light to the skin and deeper tissues using LEDs or low-level laser devices. These photons are absorbed by the mitochondria, where they help:

  • Boost ATP (cellular energy)
  • Increase collagen production
  • Improve circulation
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support healthy tissue repair

A key concept is the biphasic dose response:

  • Not enough light = no benefit
  • Too much light = reduced effectiveness

This is why proper protocols are essential — something we guide you through in every session.

Red Light vs Near-Infrared Light

Red Light (630–700nm)

Penetrates 1–2mm → ideal for:

  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Fine lines
  • Acne scarring
  • Surface-level healing

Near-Infrared Light (700–850nm)

Penetrates up to 4cm → ideal for:

  • Joint pain
  • Muscle recovery
  • Deep-tissue inflammation
  • Chronic pain

Our Prism Light Pod uses both, delivering a full-body therapeutic effect.

Light Therapy vs Other Phototherapy

Red Light Therapy differs from:

  • UV tanning beds (no UV → no DNA damage)
  • Photodynamic therapy (which destroys abnormal cells)
  • Infrared saunas (heat-based, not cellular-level light therapy)

Red Light Therapy is non-thermal, non-invasive and biologically stimulating rather than destructive.

Results Gradual Faster, deeper

Home devices are great for maintenance, but if you're looking for deeper or more significant results, professional Red Light Therapy on the Central Coast is the way to go.

Red Light Therapy FAQs for Central Coast Patients

  • How many sessions should I start with?

If you’ve never used the Prism Light Pod before, we highly recommend starting with a 10-session package. This gives your body time to respond to the treatment and achieve optimal results. Think of it as a reset phase for your system.

  • Trial vs package – what’s the difference?

Our 3-session trial is exactly that – a chance to get familiar with the Prism Light Pod experience and see how your body responds.

However, if you’re new to red light therapy and looking for meaningful outcomes in recovery, maintenance or general wellbeing, we highly recommend starting with a 10-session package to experience the full benefits.

  • How many sessions does it take to feel a difference?

Most people begin to notice a difference between 3 and 10 sessions. Some feel improvements earlier, while others may take longer depending on their goals and baseline health.

  • How far apart should I book my sessions?

During your initial treatment phase, we recommend sessions daily or every second day for best results. After that, once or twice a week is usually enough for maintenance and ongoing wellness.

  • Will it cure my condition?

Red light therapy does not ‘cure’ medical conditions — it aims to reduce symptoms such as inflammation, muscle tightness, joint pain, fatigue, and more. It’s a gentle, evidence-based therapy that supports your body’s natural healing processes.

  • Does the Prism Light Pod get hot?

You’ll feel some gentle warmth during your session, as the Pod contains over 17,000 medical-grade LEDs delivering red light, but this should not be painful. If there has been a session prior to yours, it may feel cosy when you hop in. Importantly, the red light does NOT burn the skin — this is not a heat or UV treatment.

  • Is it safe to open your eyes during treatment?

Yes! Red light is completely safe for your eyes. You can choose to wear the goggles provided if you’re sensitive to brightness, but if your treatment goals are to reduce brain fog and improve sleep, focus or even eye health, we recommend leaving the goggles off for full benefit.

  • Is this like a solarium or tanning bed?

Not at all. While it may look similar to the old sunbeds, the Prism Light Pod delivers red and near-infrared light, not UV light. It is NOT a solarium, and there is no risk of tanning or sunburn.

  • Can I share my session package with a family member?

Yes — you can share your package with a family member. However, if you’re working toward a specific treatment goal, we do recommend completing your initial 10-session package for the best outcomes.
